Feminizing the voice, surgery for a higher pitched voice

Voice feminization is performed with surgical techniques whose objective is to change from a low pitch, perceived as masculine, to a higher pitch, perceived as feminine.

The patients who most often request this technique are transgender women who wish to soften and refine their voice, or women who have a very deep voice or suffer from a hormonal disorder due to an excess of androgens.

After having tried different surgical techniques, currently the treatment with the best results is Wendler’s Glotoplasty, adapted to each patient. In this technique, a union is made by means of two stitches in the anterior third of the vocal cords. In addition, the upper layer of both vocal folds is vaporized with laser to reduce the glottic mass and tension. The sutures are also secured with biological glue.

Vocal therapy after surgery is essential for the patient’s recovery. The patient should begin to speak within 15 days after surgery. The speech therapist will be vital at this stage, as he will help the patient to change his vocal gesture, intonation, resonance and voice modulation. In this way the patient will achieve a more durable and less forced voice. Optimal results are achieved approximately three months after surgery, followed by the corresponding speech therapy sessions.
