Single port, new gynecologic technique for minimal incision surgery

In recent years there has been an enormous advance in gynecological surgery thanks to the introduction of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgical techniques. Both have made it possible to provide a solution to a good number of pathologies by means of less aggressive procedures that allow for better postoperative recovery thanks, among other things, to the minimization of abdominal scarring.

Among all the advances there is one of the most recent variants of laparoscopic procedures, the so-called “single port”, which is truly exceptional. With this technique, a small incision is made in the navel and all the instruments necessary to perform the planned surgery are inserted.

The use of this technique, unlike what happens in conventional laparoscopic surgery, avoids the need for other auxiliary incisions. That is to say, at the end of the intervention there will be only one incision in the skin of about two centimeters which, in addition, will be practically hidden inside the navel, so its aesthetic result is usually excellent.

Single-port operations

Although it should be pointed out that not all operations can be performed using the single-port technique, it is true that an increasing number of procedures are being incorporated into this new variant of laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, we can affirm that its applications are currently in a phase of growth. It is to be hoped that the introduction of new equipment will allow us to further expand the number of procedures that can be performed by means of this small, single-hole surgical procedure, technically known as single port.
