Ways to treat hemorrhoids

Nowadays, hemorrhoids are one of the most common ailments. In fact, it is estimated that after the age of 30, more than half of the population will develop this pathology. Fortunately, nowadays there are modern forms of treatment that allow them to be eradicated with little pain.

Medical treatment of hemorrhoids

This type of treatment is applied in the initial stages, when hemorrhoids are still mild and internal. The guidelines to follow can be performed at home and without the need for surgery.

  • Dietary advice: the patient should hydrate with soft liquids, such as water, juices, vegetable broths, etcetera. Alcoholic beverages, abundant in sodium and caffeine, should be avoided. It is also not advisable to eat spicy, acidic and too heavy foods. The ideal is to follow a diet rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables.
  • Hygienic advice: warm water baths are recommended, along with the application of rectal ointments to relieve or reduce pain by moisturizing the area, protecting the mucosa and promoting healing. It is also advisable to use laxatives in case of constipation to avoid constipation and not overstrain the area when defecating.

Surgical treatment of hemorrhoids

The main feature of this treatment is, as its name indicates, surgery. Colorectal surgeons and experts in General Surgery are the only ones who perform it and prescribe it for hemorrhoids in very advanced stages. The complexity, the method and the postoperative period applied in these operations may vary according to the patient’s needs. Piles can be removed, sealed (with or without laser), repositioned or stapled.
