Reduction mammoplasty: an aesthetic and functional problem

Dr. Mario Redondo Vázquez, Top Doctors plastic surgeon, will talk about breast reduction.

Who can have a breast reduction?

Reduction mammoplasty is an intervention performed on patients whose main concern is to have a large and sagging breast. These are patients who request the procedure for two reasons: a physical, functional reason and an aesthetic reason. The physical problem is usually back pain and the problem caused by the weight of the breast volume and the aesthetic reason is the disproportion that occurs due to having a large volume in the upper chest and a hip or waist that does not correspond to that volume.

What does the reduction consist of? Are breast prostheses used?

Breast reduction consists in performing a surgical procedure in which skin is removed from the breast, fatty tissue, glandular tissue and decreases the diameter of the areola, the dark tissue surrounding the nipple, so that ultimately we have a smaller, lighter, firmer breast and the patient feels better about herself and more confident in her body. In some cases prostheses are used after a breast reduction for breasts that have a very empty upper pole, very sagging breasts, and in cases where patients wish to have a breast volume in a higher position or with a more striking appearance.

What type of scar is left after the procedure?

The scar resulting from a breast reduction is a scar that surrounds the diameter of the areola, has a vertical component and a horizontal component, resulting in an inverted T-shaped scar, or anchor-shaped. It is the classic breast reduction scar.

Is the result definitive and what care should be taken?

The definitive result of a breast reduction we can have it after six months although the appearance of the scars, the color, the redness that we have or that occurs during the first moments of the intervention will continue to improve progressively and certainly a year or a year and a half, or two years, can become almost invisible scars. It is very important to take care of the patient in the immediate postoperative period, so it is not advisable to make great efforts with the arms and of course avoid swimming, gym, weights for at least the first month.
