Control and treatment of childhood myopia

For more than fifteen years, Clínica Galindo has been using special contact lenses for the control of myopia in children from twelve years of age. However, a new treatment has recently been incorporated as a treatment for the control of myopia in children between six and twelve years of age. It is a newly manufactured eye drop that was recently approved and presented at the annual congress of the Andalusian Society of Ophthalmology, which was held in Cordoba.

How is myopia controlled in children?

Today, it is estimated that the prevalence of myopia is around 9% in children between 5 and 17 years of age. However, this figure rises to 25% by the age of 40.

Although the high incidence of myopia is continually associated with Asian countries, where the percentage is as high as 80% of the population, in Western countries there has been a progressive increase in the incidence rate, which has doubled over the 20th century.

What are the causes of myopia?

To date, the exact causes of myopia are not known. However, it is known that some genetic and environmental factors play a role in its development and progression.

For example, low exposure to natural light is a trigger for myopia.
