Asymmetrical breasts: when to consider surgery?

Perfect and exact symmetry in people is exceptional. If any person were to stand in front of a mirror only halfway up and try to form a whole person they might notice that, whether facially, breast or any other part of the body, the person they see is not exactly the same.

Asymmetry in the breast

In the case of the breast, when the differences between one breast and the other are very evident, breast asymmetry can cause discomfort to the patient. The reasons for this discomfort can respond to different reasons:

  • Difficulties for patients to conceal breast asymmetry with clothing.
  • Finding a suitable bra.
  • Discomfort when changing in a locker room, gym or other public place; and may even condition this type of activities.

When to consider surgery for breast asymmetry and what does it consist of?

Symmetrization surgery is indicated in the following cases:

  1. Asymmetry secondary to a tuberous breast: in this case, surgery is usually bilateral and aimed at repairing the breast tuberosity.
  2. One of the breasts much larger than the other or much smaller: in this case, it can be performed only the reduction of the large breast looking for the same volume and shape as the contralateral breast or an augmentation with implant of the breast with lack of development.
  3. The shape and structure of the breasts is different: in this case, the breasts are different in fall and shape. In these patients, it will also be necessary to operate the breast bilaterally and, frequently, breast implants will be necessary.

When should breast symmetrization surgery be considered?

It is common for patients to explain how they have been hiding it for years, concealing it and avoiding going to public places such as swimming pools, gyms or the beach so that no one can see them. In the most extreme cases, patients have never shown their breasts to anyone, not even to their partners, out of embarrassment. These patients are candidates for surgery, as long as they are willing to undergo surgery to solve the problem, since only reparative plastic surgery will solve the problem.

To be able to decide, it is necessary to go to a specialist in plastic surgery who will evaluate the case in a personalized way and explain all the pros and cons of the particular surgery, the pre-surgical indications and the post-surgical needs.
