What does advanced implantology allow and what is it indicated for

Your smile and oral health depend on habits as simple as dental care, brushing and flossing. However, there are those who are embarrassed about the state of their teeth or feel uncomfortable because of a missing tooth. In spite of this, we currently have different treatments that can give you back your smile, such as advanced implant dentistry.

As Dr. Alberto Cerezo, an expert in dental implantology, dental esthetics, periodontics, bone grafting and gum grafting, points out, advanced implantology is a set of techniques used to place dental implants in patients with bone loss. This occurs when a degenerative process begins in which the bone that housed the tooth stops receiving stimuli from that tooth and it loses its function, atrophying and losing density and size.

Implantology has revolutionized dentistry, since it allows the replacement of lost teeth in a functional and esthetic way.

Advanced implantology is used to restore function and esthetics to anyone who has lost teeth. The expert points out that today this treatment is aimed at any patient who has lost one or more teeth and even when there is little bone available, since there are bone regeneration techniques that allow for the correct placement of implants.

As for the procedure, the doctor reminds us that the aim of the treatment is to restore the patient’s esthetic functionality. With this in mind, the patient’s characteristics and available bone will be assessed and the type of implants and type of bone regeneration needed will be studied and, consequently, which prosthesis will be adapted to the implant.

Procedure

The treatment begins with a visit in which diagnostic tests are performed. First of all, a 3D scan is performed to assess the amount of bone the patient has and, based on this, the best treatment for each case is decided.

After implant placement, the patient must wait 3 months, if there has been no bone regeneration, and between 4 and 12 months, if there has been some type of bone regeneration, before placing the definitive prosthesis.

Care after treatment

Once the implants have been placed, they should be cared for as well as our own teeth. Dr. Alberto Cerezo recommends:

  • Brush teeth 2-3 times a day
  • Use interproximal brushes
  • Use an oral irrigator to access those areas that the toothbrush cannot reach.
  • Use dental floss

The use of low concentration mouthwashes is also indicated for the maintenance of the implants and, obviously, to go to the periodic revision that would vary depending on each person and it will be between 3, 6 or 12 months to guarantee a professional maintenance.
