Things to consider before undergoing breast reduction

Breast reduction surgery encompasses all surgical techniques aimed at reducing the size of the breast. All of them involve a remodeling of the breast, that is, in addition to reducing a more harmonious breast is achieved, more in line with the physical characteristics of the patient.

Breast reduction techniques

There are many techniques to reduce breast volume. The first thing we have to do is to anatomically assess the breast to be operated. We must know if the proportions are correct, if there is any deformity (apart from the excess volume), and at what distance is the nipple-areola complex.

Depending on the volume to be reduced, one technique or another will be applied. Some options are relatively simple and, with them, a moderate volume can be removed without using an aggressive technique; and there are others that use wider approaches involving scars with a horizontal component, which are used when an excessive volume has to be removed or when the breast has to be raised a lot.

It is the surgeon who has to assess how the breast is and what maneuvers will be required to perform the remodeling of the same, as it is very important to choose the technique indicated for each patient.

In general, breast reduction procedures are highly valued by patients; they themselves say that “a weight is lifted off their shoulders”.

The aesthetic result is very good, and is perceived immediately after surgery.

Review and follow-up after breast reduction

In reduction mammoplasties we follow a monitoring system to make sure that the healing is good. The patient usually returns at one week, one month, three months, six months, and then annually thereafter. We like to follow patients over time.

We also believe it is very important to follow postoperative physiotherapy, that is, methods to reduce inflammation and shorten the postoperative period. It is performed by physiotherapists who specialize in this type of therapy; they drain the inflammation from the area so that postoperative discomfort is reduced and better long-term results are achieved.
