Assisted Reproductive Techniques, an aid to achieve pregnancy

Egg vitrification is an assisted reproduction technique that preserves fertility by freezing eggs so that they can be fertilized in the future.

Nowadays, more and more women decide to postpone their maternity, either for personal or work reasons or due to the current economic situation. For every year that a woman decides to delay the moment of becoming a mother, the chances of becoming pregnant are reduced by 5%, that is why it is important to inform and make known the different advances that exist today and that help to achieve the desired pregnancy.

Egg vitrification is booming, and in recent months the demand has increased significantly. This technique preserves a woman’s fertility by freezing the eggs so that they can be successfully fertilized in the future. However, it must be taken into account that vitrification is not a life-long insurance since the eggs extracted may not be of sufficient quality, the woman may have abnormalities, and pregnancy at an advanced age may entail certain risks.

On the other hand, difficulties can also arise when seeking pregnancy. About 15% of couples of childbearing age have problems in achieving pregnancy. In these cases, they can resort to different techniques to fulfill their desire. One of the most requested is artificial insemination. Another of the most requested treatments is in vitro fertilization (IVF). Through this technique, the woman’s eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with the sperm of her partner or an anonymous donor, and the embryos obtained are then transferred to the uterus.

The success of all these techniques depends on many factors, but one of the most important is the age of the expectant mother. Under 35 years of age, the spontaneous pregnancy rate in a couple under 35 years of age is 20-25%. The chances of pregnancy with artificial insemination are between 15% and 20%, and 50% with IVF; and from that age onwards, the rate decreases progressively. For this reason, it is important to inform and raise awareness of all the circumstances that influence the possibility of achieving pregnancy.
