Rhinomodeling: the alternative to rhinoplasty

Traditionally, aesthetic problems of the nose have been solved with rhinoplasty, which is the surgical intervention that modifies the bony and cartilaginous structure of the nose. There is, in specific cases, a non-surgical and minimally invasive alternative called rhinomodeling. This technique consists of injecting hyaluronic acid in certain areas to improve aspects of the nose, eliminating asymmetry and irregularities, without resorting to surgery and trying to recover the appearance of a harmonious and natural nose.

What are the applications of this technique?

A correct evaluation of the problem is necessary to decide if this technique would be optimal for the patient. Rhinomodelation has some very specific indications such as:

  • Patients who do not want general anesthesia or in whom surgery is not advisable for medical reasons.
  • Correction of small deformities that can be solved without surgery.
  • As a complement to surgery, correcting small posterior defects.

However, the most frequent indication are those cases already operated, where successive rhinoplasties increase the technical difficulty and also the predictability of the results. We speak of secondary rhinoplasty when the intervention is performed for the second time and in these cases rhinomodeling may be indicated.

What are the advantages of rhinomodelation?

It is a very versatile procedure that can be used as an alternative or as a complement. It is fast, minimally invasive and it is also a lower cost option than rhinoplasty. The assessment of the indication should be performed by a specialist who has experience in rhinoplasty and with a broad knowledge of nasal anatomy. In this way the complications of the injection of the filling substance are minimized. It should be emphasized that this substance is resorbable and therefore may require repeat treatment within a period of time that varies from person to person. If the treatment is appropriate for the specific problem, it may be a highly recommended alternative.
