Prostate Cancer Unit

Every year in Spain 20,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed. Due to advances in both early diagnosis and more effective forms of treatment, the prevalence of patients with prostate cancer, treated and alive, is increasing.

Prostate cancer rhobotic surgery

Treatments have undergone major changes in the last decade. Robotic surgery (Da Vinci) is the best option in tumors located in the gland and patients up to 75 years old, with medium or high Gleason (tumor grade).

Robotic Surgery has ostensibly improved and surpassed, in precision and results, normal Laparoscopic Surgery and with it we can operate not only prostate tumors but also bladder and kidney tumors, occupying its most important role in the most advanced Urology. Our team has more than 5 years of experience and more than three hundred successfully treated cases. From now on it is also present in the Santa Elena Clinic in Madrid.

In patients over 70 years old, or younger, with Gleason up to 8, PSA less than 20, prostate of less than 40 cc and negative extension studies (CT and bone ganmagraphy), the first option for its low invasiveness and minimal sequelae, may be the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound: HIFU (www.hifu-planet.com).

The robotic ultrasound device is the HIFU-Ablatherm®. 93% of the biopsies performed in a protocolized way, one year after treatment, show absence of tumor.

Our team is the most expert in this treatment, of which we have already performed more than a hundred cases in the last 7 years.

The team, coordinated by Dr. S. Giménez-Artieda is formed by Drs: Javier Azparren and Ion Madina (Da Vinci) and Hernández Villaverde and Martín Martinez (HIFU) (www.uroandrologia.com). We develop all our activity in the Santa Elena Clinic.

IMRT and Brachytherapy are other options that are also contemplated in our Unit, within the field of Radiotherapy, in collaboration with the Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal.
