Ultrasonic rhinoplasty, greater precision and more natural aesthetic results

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is the surgical procedure performed to reshape the nose using ultrasonic files and high precision saws. Dr. Perez Barrero, specialist in plastic surgery, explains this method, which allows greater control in the modeling and cutting of the nasal bones. In addition, it enables the surgeon to preserve the structures of the nasal dorsum with the intention of obtaining more natural results (preservation rhinoplasty). This technique achieves better aesthetic results and a much faster recovery than other procedures, while there are fewer complications during the postoperative period. Using an “ultrasonic” system means making use of ultrasonic energy by means of a tool called a piezotome, which does not damage the soft tissues, does not burn the skin or injure it.

What are the differences with respect to conventional rhinoplasty?

Using the ultrasonic rhinoplasty technique has a number of advantages over conventional rhinoplasty. There is greater precision when sculpting the nose, since the bones of the nose can be remodeled more precisely, avoiding unwanted fractures, even in fragile or unstable bones. The tissues suffer less trauma, i.e., there is less edema, swelling and facial ecchymosis (bruising), which are more frequent in conventional rhinoplasty. In addition, more natural and stable results are achieved, obtaining less asymmetries and irregularities, ensuring the permanence of the change in the long term. Another advantage to highlight is the fast recovery that this technique allows. As there is less trauma, the patient can recover in less time and start to lead a normal life.

In which cases is it indicated?

This ultrasound procedure can be used in any type of rhinoplasty. Above all, because the tools used for this surgery are adapted to the different types of nose. As we have said, its procedure is optimal for interventions aimed at preserving the nasal cavities.

What does the procedure consist of?

The first thing to keep in mind is that ultrasonic rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, for the comfort of both the patient and the surgeon. The surgery usually lasts approximately two and a half to three hours.

How are the results after surgery?

Thanks to the specialists, the results of this surgical procedure using ultrasonic energy are similar to those of the conventional technique. However, it should be noted that a more precise cut is achieved, since the scarring is much more directed and that allows a better final result by reducing the possibility of aberrant scarring as with a conventional rhinoplasty. The risks of ultrasonic rhinoplasty are minimal, even so, the greatest risk would be to obtain an unsatisfactory result of the patient.

What is the postoperative and recovery period for ultrasonic rhinoplasty?

Once the surgery is performed, the patient will wear a plaster or thermoplastic splint for ten days. The face is usually swollen during the following days. However, there will be less bruising around the eyes than in conventional rhinoplasty. After some time, the face will practically recover its natural appearance and in a short time, the patient will be able to return to his or her usual routine. As there is less trauma, as we have already mentioned, the patient suffers less stress in the postoperative period and therefore the recovery is much faster, both aesthetically and personally.
