Aesthetic Medicine after 50 years of age

When should we start performing facial rejuvenation treatments?

Although there is no specific age to start with this type of treatments, it is recommended from the age of 30 onwards, in order to maintain an optimal skin quality.

Evidently, from that age on, it will not be necessary to perform volume recovery treatments, being enough those of mesotherapy to help prevent. From the age of 40 or 50, it will be time to start with wrinkle remedies and volume restoration.

How to choose a treatment?

A personalized assessment is essential in order to evaluate the needs of each person according to the quality of their skin and its response to aging.

In summary and in general terms, we could say the following:

  • Botulinum toxin is indicated for expression wrinkles (upper third of the face).
  • Hyaluronic acid is indicated for volume recovery.
  • Collagen stimulators are used to restore skin density.

In the following, we will describe the treatment options from 50 years of age onwards.

Botulinum toxin

Also known as Botox, treatments on the upper third of the face are aimed at treating and/or preventing the prevention of wrinkles (crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead). It consists of a quick and painless treatment, with visible effects after a few days.

Botox is not marketed or legalized for applications in the middle and lower third of the face, since its use is not suitable for these areas.

Hyaluronic acid

In the other areas of the face, the treatments are focused on:

  • Recovering volumes.
  • Improve the quality of the skin, which also thins due to collagen loss.

Areas of action may include cheekbones, nasolabial folds, jawline or lips, among others.

Skin boosters can also be used to improve skin quality. These treatments, based on hyaluronic acid, are used in the form of mesotherapy without generating a volumizing effect.

Tightening threads

The objective of this treatment is to improve the quality and strength of the skin, to prevent sagging. It is important to clarify that a lifting effect will not be generated, since this can only be achieved by surgery.

The threads will help to recover the collagen, tightening the area and preventing the sagging from advancing, delaying a possible surgical lifting intervention. For these reasons it is especially advisable to apply this treatment after the age of 50, since this is the time when a loss of skin elasticity begins to be noticed.

As we have seen, there are many treatments, which must be adapted according to each patient and their needs. For more information about them, contact a specialist in Aesthetic Medicine.
