What causes cataracts
Under normal conditions, light rays pass through the transparent lens forming a clear image on the retina. Cataract is the opacification of the crystalline lens, which causes a decrease in vision.
Currently, the only treatment in ophthalmology is surgery. In modern cataract surgery, the choice of the lens is as important as the performance of the surgery itself, and is what will make the difference in the outcome.
Cataract surgery
Thanks to new surgical techniques and the development of the so-called Premium Lenses (toric lenses, multifocal lenses…), the goal of surgery today is not only that the eye recovers transparency and vision, but also that the patient, after surgery, depends as little as possible on glasses for daily activities.
The technique of choice today is phacoemulsification, which combines the use of ultrasonic energy and aspiration to remove the cataract. The use of the most modern software for the control of ultrasound energy and fluidics allows clean and fast surgeries, accelerating visual recovery after the procedure.
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, under topical anesthesia (drops), and lasts approximately 10 minutes. It is performed through microincisions between 2-3 millimeters, which then do not require sutures, allowing a quick return to daily life.
