Coronavirus: is it here to stay?

In recent months there has been talk of nothing but the possibility that the virus is here to stay, with some experts warning that there could be a new outbreak of infections in the fall.

Many of us are looking forward to the arrival of summer, but what will happen in autumn if proper measures and precautions are not taken? A resurgence is almost assured.

Without going any further, four days ago the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, announced “some outbreaks” in Lleida, Totana, Cuenca and Ceuta. So, although for now the number of infections continues to fall, we cannot relax. The moment normality is restored, businesses open 100% and we all return to conquer the streets, the risk of contagion will skyrocket.

For this reason it is very important to be aware of and adapt to what the new normal demands: social distance and a mask.

But what would happen if the outbreak did not occur in Spain?

Even so, the whole country would be at risk since preventing and controlling imported cases is very difficult and not always possible. Globalization has brought us good and bad things and among them is the possibility of traveling from one country to another and even from one continent to another with little effort.

The control system has to be exhaustive and requires the follow-up of all persons who have had contact with infected patients.

Is it possible to stop the spread?

If the virus were to continue infecting thousands of people as it has done so far, it would become an endemic disease, which is all the more reason to understand that vaccination is currently the number one priority for all countries. But in the meantime, it is very important that we follow the health recommendations and adjust to the health protocols that are applied precisely to prevent further contagion and stop a future outbreak.

The possible outbreak in autumn will depend, mainly, on:

  • Compliance with the social distance and the rest of health measures.
  • Possibility of finding a vaccine.
  • Government response to a future increase in infections.
  • Preparedness and management of health resources.

But the consequences of a new outbreak in autumn could be even greater, since in addition to the danger of the virus itself, the seasonal influence could cause serious damage.

However, now that we have learned our lessons, even if there are still many unanswered questions, we cannot allow a future outbreak to shake us as it did this first time.
