Stereotactic prone table with tomosynthesis, new breast diagnostic equipment

The Centro de Patología de la Mama – Fundación Tejerina is a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

It is the first center in Spain and Madrid to incorporate digital mammography in 2000, to do the same with breast Tomosynthesis in 2010 and, later, with Tomosynthesis with contrast, in 2015.

The last update has been recently, with the incorporation of the world’s first prone stereotactic table with Tomosynthesis (Hologic Affirm Prono), led by Dr. Alejandro Tejerina, specialist in Radiology.

Prone stereotactic table with Tomosynthesis

In February 2016, the world’s first prone stereotactic table with Tomosynthesis was installed at the Breast Pathology Center – Tejerina Foundation. To date, more than 150 biopsies have been performed, all of them with successful results.

Advantages of the prone stereotactic table with Tomosynthesis

The advantages of this equipment are multiple, being the most important:

  • Improvements in image quality. This is achieved with a wider selenium detector and the ability to detect lesions and some distortions only visible in Tomosynthesis.
  • Great advantages in software and ergonomics. This makes them much more comfortable and faster procedures for patients, with an approximate duration of between 15 and 20 minutes. They are faster, more precise and safer biopsies.

Advances in mammography image quality

In recent years, mammography has improved its image quality thanks to the incorporation of digital mammography and, later, with tomosynthesis mammography. This meant that previous stereotactic biopsy equipment was somewhat limited in performing biopsies on certain lesions, such as subtle clusters of microcalcifications or lesions only visible on Tomosynthesis (3D) imaging.

The image quality in diagnostic mammography had improved greatly. This makes it possible to detect increasingly subtle lesions, as sometimes the image quality of biopsy equipment is insufficient to locate them.
