In Vitro Fertilization: Benefits and Success Rates

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most widely used techniques in Assisted Reproduction. It consists of fertilizing the oocyte with the sperm in the laboratory and then transferring the resulting embryo or embryos to the patient’s uterus.

Thus, the IVF process consists of four phases:

  • Ovarian stimulation
  • Retrieval (retrieval) of the patient’s oocytes.
  • Fertilization in the laboratory
  • Transfer to the uterus (transfer)

In those patients whose oocytes are not of sufficient quality to achieve an evolutionary pregnancy, in vitro fertilization with donor oocytes is indicated. This is the assisted reproduction technique with the highest probability of success per cycle. The embryos have a great implantation potential since they come from oocytes of a young woman with no sterility problems.

When will this technique be chosen instead of other Assisted Reproduction techniques?

Assisted Reproduction can be carried out through different techniques; the choice of the most appropriate one will be determined according to the situation and diagnosis of each patient.

Generally speaking, In Vitro Fertilization with the patient’s own eggs is indicated when the future mother is 35-38 years old or in those cases in which other treatments, such as Artificial Insemination, have failed.

It is also indicated in cases of women with obstruction or absence of the fallopian tubes, low ovarian reserve, moderate or severe endometriosis and couples with genetic diseases that require preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) of the embryo. Infertility of long evolution, repeated miscarriages or sterility of unknown cause are other situations in which we would recommend In Vitro Fertilization.

IVF with Egg Donation is indicated when the mother’s age exceeds 38 years or when she presents early ovarian failure, menopause, genetic causes or has undergone cancer treatments, for example.

What are the benefits of this technique compared to others?

In Vitro Fertilization has advanced a great deal in recent years and today it offers very high pregnancy rates as long as it is performed in a qualified center. The diagnosis, the personalized orientation of each case and its coordination by the medical team are key to the success of the process.

It is also essential that it is performed in a laboratory equipped with advanced technology in Reproductive Biology, in order to obtain and select the most suitable eggs, sperm and embryos to achieve pregnancy.

What are the success rates of In Vitro Fertilization?

Institut Marquès has the best results in Assisted Reproduction.

At Institut Marquès we obtain a cumulative pregnancy rate of 72.4% on average per cycle of In Vitro Fertilization with our own eggs. This rate varies depending on the age of the woman, in women under 35 years of age, the figure reaches 82.6% and 31.6% in women over 40 years of age.

In the case of IVF with egg and sperm donation, our pregnancy rate per cycle is 91.5%. These excellent results have been achieved by transferring a single embryo in practically all treatments. In this way, we have demonstrated that the transfer of a single blastocyst (embryo on its fifth day of development) improves success rates.
