Intraocular lens IPCL: fast and effective treatment

Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and eyestrain are common eye diseases that make daily life difficult for patients. Today, phakic intraocular lenses represent a breakthrough in the treatment of these conditions.

Until a few years ago, laser surgery was the only option to say goodbye forever to glasses or contact lenses. Now it is possible to obtain perfect vision through a quick intervention and without modifying the structure of the crystalline lens, thanks to phakic intraocular lenses.

Phakic intraocular lenses are artificial lenses that are implanted between the crystalline lens – the eye’s natural lens – and the iris. In this way, they correct the defocusing caused by a refractive error (myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism) without altering the ocular tissues.

In recent years, these lenses have been improved, both in design and functionality. As a result of this progress, the IPCL was born, a type of phakic intraocular lens capable of correcting any of the refractive defects, including eyestrain (or presbyopia).

The IPCL (Implantable Phakic Contact Lens) has a number of advantages:

It is customized according to each patient’s needs.
Corrects a wide range of dysfunctions
It is permanent, but if vision changes, it is easily replaceable.
Its material protects ocular tissues from ultraviolet radiation.

IPCL: suitable pathologies and patients

IPCLs correct myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.

To undergo an IPCL procedure, the patient must be 21 years of age (if the refractive defect does not continue to develop). Otherwise, the lens can be customized according to the size and shape of the individual eye.

IPCL is not a substitute for laser treatment, but offers a possibility when laser treatment is not considered appropriate. It is therefore ideal for people with thin corneas, large pupils or those suffering from dry eye syndrome, who cannot use other procedures.

Phakic intraocular lenses: what is it?

The lens is placed in the eye through a millimetric incision, without damaging or modifying the crystalline lens or the cornea. With this quick procedure, which lasts approximately 10 minutes, patients immediately improve their visual quality.

Intraocular lenses: postoperative period

The recovery time for this type of Ophthalmology procedure is minimal and painless. Generally, there is no postoperative discomfort and in a few days the patient can return to his or her daily routine. The only care to be taken into account are:

  • The application of the eye drops prescribed by your ophthalmologist.
  • Maintaining good eye hygiene
  • Avoid shocks or the introduction of dust or other harmful substances into the eye.
