Size, expiration and immediacy, answers to the frequent doubts for a breast implant

My patients frequently ask me if breast implants have an expiration date. Implants are not like yogurt – with a fixed expiration date – but they are limited in time by material fatigue. Over the years, breast implants can lose firmness although we work with better and better materials, so the duration is getting longer. Even so, I recommend that after a breast implant, women over 35 years of age should have a breast ultrasound check-up every year, and women under this age should have a breast ultrasound every two years. If during this review there is any suspicion of rupture, the patient should go to her plastic surgeon, who will recommend the best for her. Personally, I prefer a nondescript visit to my practice to any further complications.

Along with expiration, another of the star questions is whether the results are immediate. And yes, breast augmentation is the procedure that offers the most immediate results with the greatest initial satisfaction, because the next day the patient can already appreciate the change and improve their quality of life. As the WHO explains, health not only includes the optimal state of all vital organs but also the fact that the person feels at ease with himself and has the best possible quality of life. Self-esteem issues are and will always be fundamental for the human being. In my clinic, we work with the most advanced biocompatible implants and, in times like the present, in which our society suffers from the so-called dictatorship of beauty, medical professionals have to be deeply coherent and serious about what we should or should not do.

And after immediacy and expiration, size is another of the biggest doubts and a primary issue. Most of my patients always tell me: “I want a breast augmentation, but I don’t want it to be very noticeable”. For me, it is essential to listen to the patient to understand which breast implant will be the most appropriate, because it will be harmoniously proportional to her height, weight and shoulder width. In order to choose the optimal size, I have several gauges that the patient puts in front of a mirror and, together, we see which size is the most appropriate for her. Normally, I recommend one size larger than what you initially have in mind because six months after surgery, the swelling goes down and the breast size decreases slightly.

Finally the money comes in many times. To address this issue we start from the premise that health is fundamental, and that is why, if we measure the satisfaction that comes with being comfortable with oneself, the price is not such a relevant issue. In addition, as a professional with a long experience, I am afraid of these marketing promotions at low prices, in breast implants. An intervention is something serious, so it is essential that the patient has a good communication with her surgeon and that the surgeon has the maximum training and professional experience. Currently, the cost of a breast augmentation procedure is between 6,000 and 8,000 euros.
