Breast augmentation with breast prosthesis or lipotransfer

What does breast augmentation surgery consist of?

Breast augmentation surgery consists of increasing the patient’s breasts by inserting breast prostheses in these organs, or even lately they are being performed with the injection of fat from the same patient (lipotransfer).

In some cases, breast reconstruction may also be needed, either because there is deformity in the breast due to some congenital alteration or because of pregnancy or because, because of age, the breast has fallen or lost its shape.

What techniques are used for this type of surgery?

There are different techniques for breast augmentation, the most commonly used today is the introduction of breast prostheses under the chest muscles (pectoral, serratus and abdominal). This is the best way for the prosthesis to fit perfectly. Another technique is the lipotransfer, it is performed by introducing fat -from any part of the body- at the level of all the tissues of the breast, so that it goes perfectly making body with them.

The techniques for breast augmentation are based on breast reconstruction techniques, so it is important that when you go to a doctor to be treated for breast augmentation the surgeon has experience in breast reconstruction, it is the only way that the intervention is correctly.

What complications are found after breast surgery?

This type of intervention, done by an expert surgeon, almost never has complications. We could find a small hemorrhage that would produce a hematoma or a muscle hernia due to an effort of the patient. But if the patient has been operated by an experienced surgeon and complies perfectly with the post-operative period, he/she will not normally encounter any complications.

What type of anesthesia is used in these surgeries?

In this type of surgery sedation and general anesthesia can be used, depending on the degree of difficulty of the intervention with respect to the patient’s breasts. After the intervention, sensitivity is recovered, since the surgeon preserves the nerves that give that sensitivity.

When can we resume normal activities after surgery?

We can resume our normal activities, not sporting and in a job that does not require great physical effort, between 15 and 20 days after surgery. If we are engaged in physical work, we usually start after one month. In the case of sports activities, it will be necessary to wait between two and three months before being able to resume them.
