Rhinoplasty, a nose surgery with natural results

What is the purpose of rhinoplasty?

The goal of rhinoplasty is the aesthetic improvement of the nose. What we really want is to achieve a nose that is proportionate with the rest of the facial structures. That is, to achieve a harmonious, symmetrical and, above all, natural nose, without altering its functionality. Sometimes, this function is already altered and an operation called rhinoseptoplasty must be performed.

In order to achieve these objectives, the most important thing is the first visit with the patient. We have to see what the patient wants, what we can offer to that patient and how we are going to achieve it. There are skins that are thicker and with which we cannot achieve a thinning of the nose, or other alterations that cannot be changed. It is not a question of the patient coming to us with a model and us copying it exactly, but that with the limitations of the patient himself we can achieve a nose as natural and aesthetic as possible.

At what age is it possible or advisable to have rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be performed when there is a complete development of the person. In women, the anatomical development is usually earlier than in men and is about 16 years. In men it is customary to wait until the age of 18. Although there is a very important psychological factor, related to the maturation of each person, and that can lengthen the recommended age.

What types of rhinoplasty are there?

Depending on the approach we speak of two types of basic rhinoplasty. The traditional one is the closed rhinoplasty, which is performed entirely through cuts inside the mucosa and we use it for the most common and simple rhinoplasties. On the other hand, for more complex rhinoplasties, we use a technique with which we open the skin of the columella, which is the lower area of the nose, and we can expose the entire nasal tip and have greater control of the entire tip.

What is the post-operative period like?

The post-operative period after rhinoplasty is not painful but it is uncomfortable. If we only do the aesthetic part we usually place a tamponade and remove it after 24 hours. If we also do the septum, this tamponade can be left for up to 4 days. In case we have to break the nasal bone, we need to place a splint (plastic or plaster) and we will keep it for 7 to 10 days. The breakage of the bone involves greater discomfort, swelling of the periorbital area and bruising, which usually lasts about 2 weeks.

When can I see the results of the intervention?

The result of the intervention can be appreciated when the nasal splint is removed, after 7 to 10 days. However, the swelling of the nose will last between 2 and 3 months; and the naturalness of the nose will be obtained after 6 months.
