What is chin surgery?

Mentoplasty, also known as chin surgery, is a common surgical technique that consists of increasing the size of the chin.

This technique harmonizes the patient’s face, rejuvenating it and creating a positive balance, giving a greater sense of beauty. It serves to correct the lack of cheekbones, which transmits a feeling of old age and tiredness.

It is common for patients to come to the consultation without knowing that they require a chin augmentation, consulting about other issues (for example, they want to sharpen the tip of the nose), which happens when the lack of chin does not stand out in an obvious way. Once it is detected and treated, the results give them great satisfaction.

The technique is usually accompanied by rhinoplasty, in cases where the profile is unbalanced.

For which cases is it indicated?

Surgery is indicated for patients over 18 years of age who present:

  • Sagging cheekbones
  • Elongated or blurred facial ovum
  • Facial flaccidity
  • Poor projection of the cheekbone

What does the procedure consist of?

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia, and can be combined with other techniques. The total duration is approximately 45 minutes.

The treatment is based on inserting a prosthesis designed specifically for the area, chosen by the surgeon according to the particularities of the patient, and thus achieve chin augmentation. To insert the prosthesis, the surgeon will make a small incision under the chin or inside the mouth.

Postoperative period

Normally the patient can return to normal life 2 or 3 days after surgery, although the swelling may last a few weeks. It is also advisable to avoid sun exposure during these initial weeks.

The result is immediate, but until the aforementioned swelling disappears, the definitive results cannot be appreciated. In any case, it is important to clarify expectations beforehand, in order to have a realistic idea of the change.

Finally, there is also a non-surgical technique to advance the chin that also provides permanent results: Bioplasty.
