What is syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by bacteria. It affects both men and women by infecting the genital area, anus or mouth.

Prognosis of the disease

The main symptoms of syphilis are:

  1. Appearance of a round, painless sore.
  2. Reddish rashes on the skin
  3. High fever
  4. Swollen lymph glands
  5. Sore throat

Medical tests for syphilis

There are two tests for syphilis:

  • Blood tests.
  • Analysis of the fluid from the syphilis sore.

What causes syphilis?

Syphilis is caused by direct contact with a syphilis sore, usually through unprotected sex or kissing. It can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy. The disease is not spread by sharing utensils or clothing.

Can it be prevented?

Syphilis can be prevented by always having sex with the same person who does not have syphilis. To reduce the appearance of this pathology, sex should be practiced with protection, being the condom the best method. The condom will only be effective if it covers the syphilis sores.
