What are the hand pathologies?

The most frequent hand problems include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

It consists of a compression of the median nerve that passes through the wrist, causing frequent numbness of the fingers. It also causes tingling, weakness and muscle damage in the fingers and hands.
It is usually caused by repeating the same hand and wrist movement frequently, so any type of manual and repetitive activity is a risk factor. Specialists assure that young people are prone to suffer this pathology due to the excessive use of technology.

  • Injuries

They can be fractures, sprains, ligament ruptures or dislocations. In most cases they occur during the performance of a sporting activity.

  • Osteoarthritis

It is a kind of arthritis that affects the joints. When osteoarthritis occurs, the cartilage that usually protects the bones and facilitates their gliding, breaks down. This causes the bones to rub against each other, allowing the growth of bumps called bone spurs. It usually affects older or overweight people.

  • Tendonitis
Tendons attach muscles to bones. Tendonitis is the severe inflammation of a tendon and usually occurs when there have been recurrent joint injuries.

What are the causes of hand pathologies?

The hands suffer, in great part, due to wear and tear, something that occurs earlier in men than in women. Other causes that interfere in the pathologies of the hand are:

  • Lack of calcium.
  • Hormonal changes, for example, when menopause approaches.
  • Injuries.
  • Bone-related diseases.
  • Pregnancy.
  • infections
  • autoimmune diseases

Can they be prevented?

In some cases, hand pathologies can be prevented by regular exercises that relax the joints at times of constant work. These exercises should be performed every day with both hands and have the purpose of relaxing the hand, ending stiffness and making them feel more agile.

They are based on bending the knuckles, stretching the fingers, touching the fingertips, making circles with the wrist and grasping objects.

What does the treatment consist of?

The treatment applied to the hand depends on the ailment, but all are aimed at recovering the functionality of the limb.
Some injuries can be treated with rest and cessation of activity, but some of the fractures and conditions that cause limb deformities require surgery.
