Intragastric Balloon

What is the intragastric balloon?

The intragastric balloon is a spherical silicone device that is inserted into the stomach of patients with a significant degree of obesity, especially those suffering from morbid obesity. It is the most effective solution to combat obesity without the need for surgery.

Why is it performed?

The intragastric balloon is indicated for obese patients between 18 and 60 years of age with a body mass index between 30 and 40 kg. Thanks to the intragastric balloon, it is easier for the patient to maintain a diet aimed at losing weight by reducing food intake. It is especially indicated for those patients who suffer from obesity and have tried to lose weight through other means.

What does it consist of?

The intragastric balloon treatment consists of different phases. First there is an initial evaluation in which the patient’s clinical history and complementary studies are performed. The intragastric balloon is introduced endoscopically and filled with serum, reaching the volume of a ball. In this way, it occupies a considerable space in the stomach, causing a feeling of satiety in the patient and a consequent decrease in hunger.

Preparation for the intragastric balloon

Before the intragastric balloon is placed, the basal metabolism, the body mass index and the recommended values of fat, muscle mass and water are calculated. According to the results obtained, the physician will elaborate a personalized diet. During the 48 hours prior to the treatment, the patient must follow a special diet and take medication.

Post-procedure care

During the first days of intragastric balloon adaptation, a transition is made from a liquid diet to a solid hypocaloric diet, which is adjusted to each patient and situation.

The intragastric balloon alone does not cause weight loss in the patient, but periodic controls and a healthy diet must be followed. It is usually removed after six months, the maximum time indicated. Once removed, the patient continues to undergo a multidisciplinary medical follow-up to consolidate healthy dietary habits.
