What is athlete’s foot?

Athlete’s foot or foot fungus is a pathology caused by fungi known as tinea pedis. It can occur between the toes, heels, palms of the hands, etc. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can last a short or long time and even reappear over time.

What are the symptoms of athlete’s foot?

The most common symptom is cracked skin peeling off between the toes or on the sides of the feet. Other symptoms may include itching, red itchy skin, oozing blisters, or discoloration or detachment of the nails (if the fungus spreads to the nails).

What are the causes of athlete’s foot?

Athlete’s foot can be caused by a fungus or yeast that proliferates on the skin of the feet. This fungus is usually found in warm and humid areas. Thus, the risk factors are:

  • Wear closed shoes, especially if they are plastic
  • Perspiring a lot
  • Keeping your feet wet for a long time
  • Having a minor nail or skin lesion.

Foot fungus can be spread by direct contact or by contact with items such as socks or shoes or surfaces in swimming pools or showers.

Can athlete’s foot be prevented?

The main measures to follow to prevent athlete’s foot are:

  • Keep feet clean and dry, especially between the toes.
  • Wash your feet with soap and water and dry the area thoroughly and carefully.
  • Wear clean cotton socks and change them as often as necessary.
  • Wear shoes in public swimming pools or showers
  • Use antifungal powders or drying powders if you are prone to or often go to places where they can be picked up.
  • Wear shoes that are well ventilated and made of a natural material (such as leather).
  • Do not wear shoes with plastic linings

How is athlete’s foot treated?

Antifungal creams or powders may help control the infection. They are recommended for up to one to two weeks after the infection has cleared. If it does not improve with this treatment after two to four weeks or if it recurs frequently, you should see your doctor, who may prescribe oral medications, antibiotics and topical creams.
