Posturology

What is posturology?

Posturology is the study of posture which is the position in which someone holds the body. It is a multi-disciplinary technique developed in Europe and practiced in France and Spain, as well as in other countries.

Posturology considers posture from a global perspective and aims to correct poor posture which in turn should prevent or correct other conditions. Poor posture can be defined as an unbalanced relationship between different parts of the body that need to be realigned.

Poor posture also affects the joints.

Why is posturology performed?

Posturology aims to correct posture and normalize movement. It is believed that only 10% of the population does not suffer from postural imbalance. Posturology patients often complain of aches and pains, which posturology can identify as a result of poor posture and abnormal habitual movements, such as the way one works at a desk.

Posturology also believes that certain symptoms, if left untreated, can lead to other problems, for example, a certain foot problem can lead to knee disruption and hip rotation.

What does posturology consist of?

Over a period of time, posture is “recalibrated” by treating the four elements that contribute to posture:

  • The feet
  • The eyes
  • The bone of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • The skin

Pain or discomfort experienced by a patient is treated in a multidisciplinary response, whereby not only orthopedic causes are considered, for example, but the role of the above four components in creating a well-balanced posture is considered.
