What is trichology?

Trichology is a specialized field of medicine concerned with the study of the diseases, anatomy and functions of hair and hair. It is the science of the scalp and hair, both healthy and diseased. Hair and scalp condition are key elements to the patient’s state of health, often unrecognized or declared as unimportant in the medical field. Hair, in fact, is a very sensitive indicator, never to be underestimated, of imbalances in the body such as metabolic problems, poor nutrition, or psycho-emotional or stress-generating influences that can negatively affect normal hair growth and appearance. In this sense, the dermatologist trichologist is able to diagnose and treat a variety of ailments and disorders of the scalp and hair such as: alopecia areata in adults and children, androgenic alopecia, alopecia totalis and universalis and male baldness, generalized hair loss during menopause, cosmetic and drug damage, congenital and hereditary alterations of the hair structure, and other disorders such as seborrheic and allergic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis and conditions such as seborrhea, dryness and itching. In most cases, the trichologist dermatologist will take a set of data that will allow him/her to identify the cause of the problem and recommend a treatment. In the context of diagnosis, you may submit the patient’s hair to a special analysis, or perform hematological tests whose results may indicate solutions also in the treatment (e.g., serum sideremia and ferritin, thyroid function profile).
