Why is it performed?

The incidence of colon cancer in Spain exceeds 30,000 new cases per year. For this reason, this test is performed in both men and women over the age of 50 who are at risk of developing colon cancer. Survival always depends on the stage at which the tumor is detected, which is why it is important to perform this diagnostic test if there is a risk. It is also important to perform it in those who have a family history of colon cancer, as they belong to a high-risk group in the population.

Preparation for the Septin 9 Test

The test is non-invasive, so it does not require prior preparation or dietary adjustment. The specialist who performs the test will indicate whether it is necessary to come fasting and other indications.

Meaning of abnormal results

If the result is positive, it means that there is an elevated risk of developing colon cancer. This result should be confirmed with a colonoscopy.

A negative result will mean, in 99.9% of cases, that the patient is healthy. However, it is recommended to repeat the test at least every 1 to 2 years, depending on the patient’s history.
