Pectoralis enlargement

What is pectoral augmentation?

By pectoral augmentation we refer to the surgical and non-surgical solutions used by men to define or reshape their pectorals. The reasons can be many, such as a physical constitution that does not promote the development of these, defects in the chest (Poland syndrome), muscular hypotrophy or simply dissatisfaction with one’s own body. In fact, despite physical exercise, the pectoral muscles may not reach the desired shape and have a smaller size than desired.

What does it consist of?

Pectoral augmentation can be achieved through three main procedures:

– Filler: this is the least invasive technique and involves the use of Macrolane, a hyaluronic acid-based gel. This is injected into the region of interest, which increases the volume. The treatment can be repeated every 30 days and is not definitive, since the gel is reabsorbed in 18 to 24 months. After each injection, the patient can resume daily activities and the results are immediately visible.

– Prosthesis insertion: involves the insertion of silicone prostheses, specifically indicated for the male pectoral muscles, in the submuscular area through a subaxial incision of 4 to 5 cm. The scar, which is located under the armpit, will be almost invisible. The prostheses are used only to increase the volume, not to change the shape of the pectorals. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia combined with deep sedation. Eight days of total rest and two to three months are required before returning to physical activity. Prosthesis insertion is particularly indicated for patients with Poland syndrome, a defect that leads to the absolute absence of the pectoralis muscle.

– Lipofilling: fat is taken from the patient from areas where it is present in excess, such as the hips, abdomen and buttocks. Through liposuction, the adipose tissue is aspirated and, once cleaned, it is injected back into the pectoral muscles. This technique avoids possible rejection, the results are natural and it is also possible to change the shape of the pectoral muscles. Also in this case, the treatment is not definitive because the fat is absorbed by the body and more sessions will be necessary.

Preparation for the treatment

All treatments are performed on an outpatient basis and require only general anesthesia. Only for treatment involving the insertion of silicone implants is a period of complete rest for eight days and two to three months before resuming physical activity. In the other cases, the patient can immediately resume normal daily activities.
