Flowmetry

What is flowmetry?

Flowmetry or uroflowmetry is a non-invasive test that records the duration and speed of urination, as well as the amount of urine voided (ml/s) and its total volume.

What does it consist of?

Uroflowmetry consists of urinating into a flowmeter, a special “collector” container that resembles a normal toilet, which makes it possible to analyze and measure the amount of urine expelled at a given time so that the data can be translated and reproduced graphically.

The test is performed on patients with urinary disorders.

Why is it performed?

Uroflowmetry is performed in patients who have problems urinating, with urinary disorders: difficulty in completely emptying the bladder, sudden urge to go to the bathroom, urinary incontinence, dribbling.

The most common causes of this disease are:

  • Urinary tract infections (urethritis, prostatitis, cystitis, vaginitis)
  • Calculi
  • Urethral contractions
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • Hypomobility of the bladder neck
  • Tumors of the urinary tract

Preparation for flowmetry

Before the test it is recommended to drink about one liter of water and hold urine.
