What is beard grafting?

Beard grafting is the treatment used to regenerate areas without beard or with a small amount of hair: sideburns, mustache and cheekbones. Local anesthesia is usually used to perform the procedure.

Why is it performed?

Usually, patients who want this treatment are those who have decided to correct areas of the beard that have no or irregular growth. Getting a good beard or even a mustache is usually very important to avoid complexes and have the ideal look.

With this treatment you can achieve the ideal beard

What does it consist of?

The treatment has several phases. First, the case is assessed by a specialist. The area to be used to shave the hair to be donated is reviewed and a hair transplant plan is designed with the beard and mustache according to the patient’s facial structure so that the result looks natural.

In the next step, the donor area is shaved to facilitate the extraction of the follicular units. So that the patient does not feel pain during the extraction, local anesthesia is administered and the follicles to be grafted are extracted one by one. Once the follicular units have been extracted, a treatment is applied to preserve and hydrate them and they are kept at a low temperature until they are implanted in the recipient area.

Finally, incisions are made in the recipient area, carefully, so as not to affect the healthy hairs in the area and, in a very cautious way, the selected follicles are grafted one by one in the incisions made, taking into account the direction, angle and depth of the patient’s beard hair.

Preparation for beard grafting

At least three days before the operation, drinks containing alcohol, caffeine or gas should not be taken to avoid interaction with some drugs or substances that increase the risk of bleeding during the operation. For the same reason, multivitamin complexes should not be taken either.

The areas to be treated should be sanitized to rule out infections and it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes for the intervention. In addition, it is important to maintain a calm and confident attitude.

Care after the procedure

The days following the treatment are the most uncomfortable stage because the graft area and the donor area may be irritated. Therefore, it is important to sleep with the head elevated, not to do physical exercise and to protect oneself from the sun to prevent sensitivity problems and to ensure optimal healing.

Alternatives to this treatment

There are several cosmetic alternatives to hair transplant surgery. In the event that the beard graft option is not the most suitable for the patient due to his hair deficit, a stem cell treatment can be performed, which seeks to regenerate the hair using a scientific technique. When grafting is not possible, but there is hair with growth potential, there are two other types of alternatives:

  • The vampire lifting or treatment with platelet-rich plasma.
  • Mesotherapy.
