What is adult circumcision?

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis, i.e. the fold of skin covering the tip of the penis. The foreskin covers the glans penis and maintains the function of establishing the correct temperature and pH to maintain its sensitivity. Although this operation is usually performed on boys under the age of three, many adults now have to undergo circumcision, which is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Circumcision does not change the shape or size of the penis.

Why is circumcision performed on adults?

In the case of adults, circumcision is usually performed for medical reasons, mainly as a treatment for phimosis and paraphimosis. However, there are also cases of adult circumcision for religious reasons.

What does circumcision consist of?

It consists of cutting a portion of the foreskin of the penis that covers the glans penis, leaving it permanently uncovered. The treatment can be performed with a dorsal incision technique where the specialist makes a small cut in the upper part of the foreskin. Another option is the covered technique whereby a line is made around the base of the foreskin which will serve as a guide to make the incision.

Preparation for circumcision

The procedure usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes and requires no preparation.

Care after the circumcision procedure

After circumcision, discomfort may be felt for several weeks, for which it helps to wear loose clothing and take painkillers. It is essential to maintain hygienic measures until complete healing: keep the glans clean and carefully wash the wound one week after the operation.

The resorbable stitches usually disappear two weeks after the operation, and painful erections will also occur for a few weeks.
