What is ultrasonic rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used to reshape the nose in order to improve facial harmony. This procedure can be performed on any patient who presents alterations in the natural morphology of the nose. Although there are no age restrictions, the most common is between 18 and 45 years.

It is essential to individualize each case, taking into account the unique characteristics of each person. Therefore, when considering a rhinoplasty, the patient’s morphological characteristics must be taken into account in order to adapt the nose to the rest of the patient’s facial features.

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is the most advanced technique
for an aesthetic nose job

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is the most advanced technique for this type of surgery, less painful, less aggressive and much more precise than traditional rhinoplasty. This technique is done through ultrasonic vibrations that have the ability to cut and reshape the bone without damaging other tissues safely and accurately. Ultrasound is used to file the bone and break it in a controlled manner to achieve optimal results for the patient.

It is currently the most valued technique and its main advantages over traditional rhinoplasty are:

  • Better remodeling of the bone contour, thanks to the use of the most advanced instrumentation, in this case a piezoelectric that achieves greater precision without leaving visible scars or fractures.
  • Much more precise osteotomies, without inadvertent fractures and irregularities.
  • No possibility of injury to soft tissues such as skin, mucous membranes or blood vessels.
  • Minimal bruising, edema or swelling, as opposed to what used to happen with traditional rhinoplasty.
  • Faster postoperative recovery. As there is hardly any trauma, you can return to normal life in a short period of time.
  • It leaves almost no scars. Only a small cut between the nostrils that in two or three months ends up disappearing almost completely.

Why is it performed?

The reason for a rhinoplasty is not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for restorative reasons. For example, nasal deviation, with obstruction of air entry, is an uncomfortable sequela that can limit a person’s quality of life. This problem can be corrected by a technique known as septoplasty.

In each patient is determined prior to rhinoplasty what changes are going to proceed, depending on the nasal morphology, and should be well explained by the plastic surgeon, to make more understandable the proposed treatment.

What does ultrasonic rhinoplasty consist of?

First of all, the surgeon must make a pre-surgical analysis and know the patient’s pretensions. Once the possibilities have been analyzed, both will agree on how the surgery will be performed.

The intervention lasts approximately 90 minutes and general anesthesia is applied to the patient. The surgeon, with the use of a piezoelectric, ultrasonic vibrations, is cutting and reshaping the bone and filing it in a millimetric way to achieve the desired results and in accordance with the patient’s physiognomy. The ultrasounds prevent the bone from fracturing and the tissues surrounding the area are respected.

Once the operation is finished, the postoperative period consists of the application of a nasal splint that the patient must wear for approximately 10 days, sometimes even less.

As a preventive measure, two nasal plugs are also placed for 2-3 days after the operation so that there is no leakage or hematoma and the structure can remain fixed. The plugs are usually uncomfortable, but in no case painful.

In almost all cases, patients who undergo this operation will not require hospitalization.

Preparation for ultrasonic rhinoplasty

The patient, before performing the operation, must have gone through a preoperative process, which includes an analytical study and an electrocardiogram, in addition to a clinical assessment by the anesthesiologist to ensure that there are no complications in this regard.

An evaluation of the nasal septum and turbinates should also be made to assess the patient’s respiratory function, which will also be treated depending on the rhinoplasty that the patient wants to have.

Last but not least, it will be necessary to have agreed with the specialist in consultation, the desired shape and the result to be obtained with the operation, so that the nose is not in accordance with the shape of the patient’s face. A 3D computer simulation of the final result can be made so that the patient can get an idea of what the result would be.

Care after the operation

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is not a painful surgery, therefore, painkillers are not usually prescribed after the operation. However, anti-inflammatory drugs are usually prescribed for the following days in case the patient has discomfort or similar symptoms.

After the operation, it is also essential to follow a series of tips and recommendations in order to be successful in the postoperative period:

  • Keep the head elevated: it is important to always keep the head elevated in order to relieve blood pressure to the head and thus avoid possible migraines or pain. In this way, we also get that the possible edema that may come out is better reabsorbed and its healing is faster and the swelling goes down.
  • Apply cold to the affected area: applying cold over the splint and on the lower eyelids during the first days will help to feel less pain and will serve as an anti-inflammatory, especially just after surgery.
  • Daily washing of the nostrils: after the first 3-4 days it is very important to start washing the nostrils with a spray containing sea water.
  • Limiting physical exercise: it is important to limit intense physical exercise for three weeks or a month, especially to avoid causing any damage from a stroke and to prevent the blood pressure from rising. Even so, sports can be done in a controlled manner and without great physical effort.
  • Avoid exposure to the sun: it is recommended that there is no direct exposure to the sun while there are visible bruises, as the bruised area could become pigmented. If there is sun exposure, even indirect, it is crucial to use a sunscreen to protect the area.
  • Do not use contact lenses or sunglasses: it is recommended not to use them for a month, until the bone is consolidated, since they would exert direct pressure on the nasal bones and could move the operated area and the result would not be optimal.
  • Sneezing with your mouth open: if you feel like sneezing, it is best to do it with your mouth open so as not to put pressure on the inner or intranasal area.

Alternatives to this treatment

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is the most advanced and innovative technique available to perform rhinoplasty.

Even so, there are other alternatives to this treatment: traditional rhinoplasty, and other techniques to reshape the nose without surgery, such as rhinomodeling.

Traditional rhinoplasty is performed by osteotomies with surgical material such as chisel and hammer, that is, fractures and cuts to model the nasal bones as desired results. It is a more aggressive technique that needs to break the bone to model it. These fractures can cause irregularities or fractures in an uncontrolled direction. Bruising is much more frequent, and recovery takes much longer than with ultrasonic rhinoplasty.

Rhinomodeling is a treatment performed to correct or beautify the nose using resorbable substances such as hyaluronic acid to achieve the desired result by the patient, under local anesthesia. By not having to undergo surgery is a much less aggressive and less intrusive technique.
