Colon Hydrotherapy

What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy is a bowel cleansing treatment to improve intestinal transit and activate the circulatory system. The objective is to purify accumulated waste and toxins, freeing the patient from pressure in the abdominal area and intestinal problems.

Why is it performed?

This technique is mainly used as an intestinal cleansing system for patients suffering from chronic constipation. In fact, even patients who are not constipated and whose bowel transit is regular, can also accumulate residues in the folds of the colon.

To maximize results, patients are advised to accompany colon hydrotherapy with a diet rich in fiber and to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, such as regular physical exercise.

What does it consist of?

Colon hydrotherapy consists of introducing a cannula with warm water at low pressure through the anus into the large intestine in order to eliminate accumulated waste. In this way, the reabsorption of water and minerals is favored. At the same time that the water is introduced, a massage is performed to regulate the contractions and the rhythm of the colon, so that its functioning is restored.

Each colon hydrotherapy session lasts about 45 minutes, and the complete treatment of the entire colon usually requires three sessions.

Preparation for colon hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy does not require any prior preparation of the patient, it is a non-invasive treatment with no side effects. However, certain contraindications should be considered, and patients with one or more of the following conditions should avoid colon hydrotherapy:

  • Pregnancy
  • Hemorrhoids, anal fissure and other anal pathologies that prevent the introduction of the cannula.
  • Diverticulitis
  • Some pathologies of the abdomen, such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or acute abdomen.
  • Severe heart disease
  • Liver diseases such as cirrhosis or renal failure
  • Recent abdominal or rectal surgery or radiation therapy
