Aspergillosis

What is Aspergillosis?

Aspergillosis is a disease caused by a fungus (or mold) found in the environment (soil, air, plants, decaying organic matter, dust, food…). It affects people suffering from immune system problems (transplant recipients, people receiving steroid treatment or chemotherapy, etc.).

The most common types of Aspergillosis involved are Aspergillosis Fumigatus and Aspergillosis Flavus. The most serious is Pulmonary Aspergillosis as it invades and damages all body tissues, especially the lungs. It especially affects people suffering from asthma or cystic fibrosis and causes wheezing and coughing. The diagnosis is obtained by performing a chest X-ray, a CT scan of the lungs or an examination of the tissues, to check for the existence of the fungus in question.
