Abdominoplasty

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is a surgery of the abdominal wall. It is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen, while repositioning and strengthening the muscles of the abdominal wall.

Why is it performed?

It is a treatment that the patient decides to have, in fact, and usually no health reasons are needed. It is performed to noticeably reduce the bulging and flabby appearance of the belly, resulting in a flat stomach and a slimmer waist.

It is also performed to relieve rashes or skin infections that develop under large flaps of skin.

What does it consist of?

The surgical procedure begins with an incision above the pubic hair area and extends down to the hips. Through this cut, the excess skin of the abdomen is removed and the abdominal muscles are strengthened.

Preparation for abdominoplasty

Days before the operation may be necessary to stop taking medications that may hinder the formation of blood clots. The surgeon will recommend taking certain medications the day of the operation, as well as a period of fasting.

Care after the operation

The patient must take into account that the scar resulting from the operation is permanent, although its extension will depend on the incision made according to the severity of each case.

The days following the treatment, the patient will have some pain and discomfort, so the doctor will prescribe painkillers. An elastic support, such as a girdle, should be worn for two to three weeks and sports and any activity that may cause tension should be avoided for four to six weeks. Return to work is considered in two to four weeks.

Alternatives to this treatment (other more advanced treatments)

As an alternative treatment to abdominoplasty there is liposuction, which although it is not a procedure specifically indicated for the abdomen, it allows the removal of fat in certain parts of the body.
