What is a dental prosthesis?

A dental prosthesis or denture is a device that seeks to replace missing teeth. Thus, they consist of artificial teeth, usually made of porcelain and resin. There are two types of dentures:

– Fixed dental prosthesis: crowns or veneers that are placed on the tooth by means of dental implantology.

– Removable dental prosthesis: they transmit strength to the teeth, gums and bone. They require special care for adaptation and maintenance, care and daily cleaning to avoid major consequences.

Why is it done?

Thanks to the placement of dental prostheses, chewing, swallowing, speech and dental esthetics can be restored.

What does it consist of?

Dental prostheses consist of the construction of artificial teeth with a support to hold them in position. In the fixed dental prosthesis, its implantation will require surgery to graft the support of the dental prosthesis to the gum. The operation is quick and is performed under local anesthesia.

Preparation for dental prostheses

Before proceeding to the implantation of a dental prosthesis, the patient must present the ideal conditions to use a dental prosthesis. To this end, the patient must visit the dentist’s office and check for good gingival health and the condition of the patient’s own teeth.

Care after the operation

After the dental implant surgery, the patient should be monitored by visits to the dentist and specific hygiene to ensure that the prosthesis does not cause rejection or infection. If the patient has pain after the operation, painkillers can be taken.
