What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgery to reshape the external female genitalia that allows the labia minora to return to their natural size and appearance, with normal proportions.

It is a minor surgery, since it is an outpatient process in which only local anesthesia is applied. The procedure lasts between 30 and 60 minutes and, after the minor procedure, the patient goes home.

The labiaplasty corrects malformations, asymmetries or the appearance of the lips of the vulva.

Why is it performed?

This operation of the genital lips corrects morphological alterations, imbalances in size between one lip and the other, or appearance of the area without altering its functionality, through the application of different techniques appropriate to each patient and the type of malformation suffered.

When the labia minora are excessively large, they present an irregular and anomalous shape. It is then when a reduction and correction of the same is performed. On the other hand, labiaplasty can also increase and reshape the labia majora through the application of hyaluronic acid injections or fatty tissue fillers.

What does it consist of?

A labiaplasty consists of making an incision in the genital area, thus eliminating both the mucosa and substances that make up the excess volume, as well as excess skin. Then, the specialist closes this incision, returning the lips of the vulva to the appropriate dimensions.

Preparation for labiaplasty

Before undergoing a labiaplasty, it is important to make a visit with the specialist where the medical history of the patient will be reviewed, and where the specialist will indicate the feasibility or not of the intervention, as well as if any prior preparation is necessary, although normally no special care is required before. It is recommended not to smoke during the two weeks prior to the intervention.

Care after the operation

The recovery time after the operation depends on how the surgical process develops. As it is an outpatient operation, the patient goes home after the operation and it is not necessary to stay in the hospital. In some special cases it may be necessary to stay hospitalized for two or three days to avoid infection and for the tissues to stabilize without suffering any injury.

It is advisable to rest for the next 24 to 48 hours. The swelling will go down and the stitches will fall out naturally. The return to work depends on each person, although it is usual to do so after the first week. Specialists advise against having sexual relations before four or five weeks, since the stitches could come loose or the scars could be damaged.
